New-Flemish Alliance
The Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (New-Flemish Alliance, N-VA) is a young political party, founded in the Autumn of 2001. Being the continuator of the Volksunie (1954-2001), it is however based on an established political tradition. The N-VA works towards the same goal as her predecessor: to establish a humane Flemish-nationalism in a contemporary way.
Politically the N-VA pleads in favour of a Flemish republic, as a member state of a democratic European confederation. Our party believes that the challenges of the 21st century can best be answered by the establishment of strong communities on the one hand and by means of a well developed international cooperation on the other hand. In between these two levels, the level of the Belgian government will evaporate, while already now good governance seems out of reach at the Belgian level.
In the same vein, the N-VA stands for the right of self-determination of peoples, this being a fundamental principle of international law, as laid down in article 1 of the charter of the United Nations. According to international law, Flanders meets all requirements to become a state on its own: a permanent population; a territory with clear external borders; a directly elected parliament which appoints the Flemish government; and international recognition as (member) state through treaties which Flanders has already concluded with other countries.
Being a smaller state with a strong communal spirit, Flanders is able to confidently take up its place in a globalising world. It is no coincidence that smaller, well run countries perform best on a scale of prosperity and well-being. The Flemish people should not underestimate itself : with a population of six million we approximately end up in 95th place out of about 193 countries in the world. Economically speaking, its gross national product puts Flanders in 24th position.
N-VA's aim of Flemish independence is not a goal in itself, but an instrument of prosperity, well-being, and cultural development of all the people living in Flanders. The Flemish state is the framework for a strong sense of belonging, for a community that attaches great importance to values. Society needs intangible values as much as material ones, this is the Leitmotiv of the N-VA's vision.
